SANTIAGO.-  The Minister of the Presidency, José Antonio Viera Gallo, has deemed the opposition’s decision not to pass legislation for a binomial system an unfortunate one.

"It is very bad for the country that there are important political forces that are not in Parliament (...)  I hope that citizens will consider this when it comes time to vote", the minister stated this morning on Radio Cooperativa.

Nevertheless, Viera-Gallo announced that the government administration plans to present the proposal again next year, "to see if ideas have matured and if people realize that it is necessary to open up the electoral system".

Referring to the student and teacher protests against the General Education Law (LGE) this morning, the minister said that, instead of creating obstacles for changes, citizens should become part of them.

"This would be much more positive and a protest, clearly, is not a step in that direction.  I believe it would be very bad news if the LGE were rejected, since it would end the system of reform and that is exactly what we don’t want, and I don’t believe that is what the teachers want either", stated Minister Viera Gallo.
