SANTIAGO.-  The Police Investigations Unit (PDI) has broken up an important drug-trafficking gang, known as “Los Guatones”, that had been providing cocaine to the majority of gangs in south Santiago, including the “Car´e Jarro”.

Nine police squads from the Anti-Narcotics Department of the PDI performed at least 23 busts last night in Santiago and Antofogasta.  During the raids, police managed to arrest 17 people, including the alleged leaders of the illicit group:  Sergio and Víctor Carte Rivas.

Sergio and Víctor Carte Rivas were both apprehended during sting that took place at 7:10 PM yesterday in the Municipality of El Bosque, where shots were fired during a police chase.   The Carte brothers shot at police vehicles and Sergio Carte received a bullet wound to his ear, while his brother was injured by a ricochet bullet that hit him in the back.

The legwork to disband the illegal organization took approximately a year and was headed by the PDI and East Metropolitan Public Prosecutor’s Office.  During the investigation, it was revealed that the group had been bringing at least one hundred kilograms of cocaine into the country each month.

The “Los Guatones” group was also found to be the source providing high-purity level cocaine to the majority of gangs in the southern part of the capital city, including the “Car´e Jarro”.
