SANTIAGO.- The boiler room of the Chemical and Laboratory building of the Coroner’s Office (Servicio Médico Legal) was the area most affected by a fire that was reported at the entity this morning.

This was the indication made by Santiago Fire Department Captain Hugo Soto, who added that the blaze began after various materials such as paper, wood and cables that were located in the boiler room caught on fire.

Soto also stated that employees at the building detected the smoke in the area early on and were able to quickly notify fire fighters, who managed to control the flames and prevent the blaze from spreading to the other floors of the building, where the clinic is located.

More than 70 volunteers from five fire departments arrived at the scene along with police officers, who evacuated the area.
