Cristián Bustos finishes 27th in Modern Pentathlon

The Chilean athlete came in 6th place in the cross country competition, but fell behind in fencing.

SANTIAGO.- Cristián Bustos finished at number 27 in the Modern Pentathlon event at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing after a good performance in the Cross Country portion, where he came in 6th place.


Among a total of 36 competitors, the Chilean athlete began in 21st place after the first portion of the event, the Shooting 10-meter Air Pistol, where he began with 178 points.


In the fencing portion of the event however, Bustos began to slip, finishing 33rd and accumulating only 688 points total.  In the third portion of the event, the 200-meter Freestyle Swim, Bustos finished 35th with a time of 2'15''26, giving him a total of 1,180 points.


The final events allowed him to bounce back a bit.  Bustos came in 23rd in the Riding Show Jumping portion, leaving him in 28th place in the general ranking, with 3,844 points. The last event, a three thousand meter Cross Country race allowed him to finish in position 27 overall (5,008 points)  after coming in 6th place with a time of 9:19.01 and gaining 1,164 points.


The event in Beijing was won by Russian athlete Andrei Moiseev, who took the gold, while both the silver and bronze medals went to Lithuania.
