SANTIAGO.- Manuel Massú, Nicolás´ father, seemed surprised by the resignation presented yesterday by Chilean tennis star Fernando González (ATP 12) from the Chilean Copa Davis team due to differences with the current board of directors, which is headed by José Hiznpeter.

Massú stated to Emol, “the truth is that all of this came as a surprise to me.  I had no idea what was happening, but it is Fernando’s personal decision and I am sure he has his reasons”.

“Nicolás doesn’t know anything about this.  I haven’t spoken to him and I don’t know whether Fernando called him to tell him that he was going to resign from the team”, Massú added.

When asked about what lies ahead for his son and whether he will also leave the national squadron, Manuel Massú said, “I can’t tell you anything right now.  I think he will continue to play but I can’t confirm anything.  Until I speak to him, I can’t tell you what his situation will be”.

For the father of Chile’s number 3 tennis player, González´ resignation greatly damages the team’s competitive level. “I hope that this works out well.  I don’t have any problem mediating and I will try, if possible, to help resolve the situation”, Massú added.
