SANTIAGO.- Following a victory against Australia that has allowed Chile to return to the Davis Cup World Group, the country's top two tennis players have not progressed significantly within the worldwide ATP ranking.
Fernando González continues at 11th in the world, along with the rest of the top players, although he is now only 5 points away from U.S. player James Blake.
Nicolás Massú has climbed one position to occupy 107th place, while Paul Capdeville slid back two slots to 135.
The player with the most significant increase in the ranking was Adrián García, who is looking make a comeback, after occupying 103rd place in 2004. García has so far jumped 26 spots and is currently listed as number 366 in the world ranking.
Cristobál Saavedra has entered the realm of the 1000 best tennis players in the world after climbing 139 positions to occupy the 952nd slot, giving the 18 year-old Viña del Mar native his best ranking so far.
Meanwhile, Spanish player Rafael Nadal, who took his country to the finals of the Davis Cup yesterday, has continued another week as number one in the world.
Nadal currently has 7,000 points, which is 1,070 points more than his closest competitor, Swiss player Roger Federer, and 2,145 points more than the number three in the world, Serbian player Novak Djokovic.
