A masked person performs a ritual dance during a "Kukeri" play in the town of Razlog, some 150km (93 miles) south of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, during an international masks festival. "Kukeri" is an important masked ritual in rural Bulgaria with participants dressed in sheepskin garments and wearing scary masks with the intention to scare away evil spirits or ghosts. An Indian Sikh offers prayers at the Golden Temple in Amristar, during the festival of "Lohri". Lohri marks the culmination of winter and marks the sun´s entry in to the "Makar Rashi" (northern hemisphere).
