MELIPEUCO.- Residents of Melipeuco experienced a night of terror following the violent, roaring explosions from the main crater of the Llaima volcano.

One third of Melipeuco's 3 thousand inhabitants voluntarily evacuated the area to the safety of nearby Cunco. Meanwhile, the rest of the town was startled from their sleep on various occasions. Currently, at least 300 people have moved to the higher ground of Melipeuco where they have set up tents, canopies and campfires to endure the cold, damp climate.

Many residents also stood on the town's main street, with their vehicles packed and ready to flee as they carefully watched the eruption.

Thunderous explosions continued throughout the night. One especially loud blast at 5:00 AM awoke the majority of inhabitants who, exhausted from the overnight vigil, had finally fallen asleep.

Puerto Montt Air Force and police helicopters are expected to arrive today to evacuate the areas closes to the volcano.

In addition, the Local Emergency Committee has arranged for military personnel to assist in evacuating and transferring residents to safer cities.
