VIÑA DEL MAR.- Attesting to the fact that his surprising elimination during the third round of the Australian Open was a fluke, Fernando González demonstrated last night that his tennis skills are perfectly intact.
González greatly impressed the more than four thousand onlookers at the Campo Las Salinas Naval Club with his solid performance.
After the game, Gonzélez stated, "It was a very tough match, Paul (Capedeville) played really well and there were some close calls, but luckily I was able to take advantage of the opportunities I had and use them to get the upper hand".
"Despite the fact that I haven't played on clay in a long time, I felt really good, although I still have some things I need to work on, especially the speed of my right forehand", he added.
"I have some free time now and that is really going to help me to get into shape for the next match" (against Argentinean player Diego Hartfield), added González.
While responding to questions about the pressure he feels as the only Chilean player in the competition, González (ATP No. 24) stated, "I don't feel pressured at all, nor am I obligated to win the tournament".
