Magallanes and Coquimbo regions showed negative growth in the last trimester of 2007

The Index of Regional Economic Activity (Inacer) also revealed that the Tarapacá and Aisén regions registered the highest economic growth, and that trade and construction were the most active sectors of the economy.

SANTIAGO.- According to data turned in today by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the Index of Regional Economic Activity (Inacer) has revealed that the regions of Magallanes and Coquimbo demonstrated negative growth during the last three months of 2007. Magallanes had a variation of -22.7% when compared to the same trimester of 2006 and the region of Coquimbo showed a variation of -2.8%.


The index also showed that the regions of Tarapacá and Aisén were the most dynamic, both enjoying a growth rate of over 10%. The former of the two grew by 14.5% (the highest in the nation) and the latter grew by 11.6%.


The report published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) also informed that the sectors of trade and construction had the highest levels of economic activity in the final trimester of 2007.


Conversely, the manufacturing industry showed growth in only five of the regions studied by Inacer.
