SANTIAGO.- Three individuals, armed with knives, entered the home of the Finnish ambassador to Chile, Ivo Salmy, early this morning. The suspects made off with jewelry and electrical appliances after breaking into the residence, located on Fray Montalva Road in the Los Dominicos neighborhood of Las Condes.
The intruders, who had driven to the home, gained entry to the residence through the yard of a neighboring house. The suspects then tied up the ambassador’s security guard and proceeded to steal various items, the value of which has not yet been appraised.
According to Captain Esteban Contreras of the East Santiago Police Force, upon entering the house, the suspects (two of whom were wearing hoods) searched the first and second floors, taking a satellite telephone and some necklaces made of lapizlasuli.
The ambassador was not at home when the robbery occurred. The official’s wife however, was home at the time and managed to hide inside a closet for almost an hour, evading detection by the intruders.
After the heist, the home’s night watchman made his way to a building across the street where he pressed a panic button to alert the municipality’s security service, which then contacted police.
