THE HAGUE.-  The Hague International Court of Justice announced today that Peru and Chile will present their cases on March 20th of 2009 and March 9th of 2010, respectively, concerning the  maritime border dispute being filed by Peru.

A press release issued today indicated that the highest judicial organ of the United Nations had said the decision “was made after taking the positions held by both parties, as well as the circumstances of the case, into consideration”.

On March 14th of this year, delegations representing both countries, led by the Peruvian diplomat, Allan Wagner, and Chilean Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Alberto van Klaveren, met with ICJ President Rosalyn Higgins behind closed doors to establish their scheduling preferences.

As the plaintiff, Peru will be the first to present reports, followed by Chile.

The presentation of the reports, which will begin the phase of written argumentation, will allow both parties to announce preliminary allegations.
