SANTIAGO.- Commander Aldo Vidal, head of the presidential bodyguards, put his position in the hands of the Chief of Police José Alejandro Bernales this morning after the National Comptroller’s Office confirmed the official’s unauthorized use of a public vehicle for personal activity.
“I have come to meet with the Chief of Police today to resign from my position. I feel that, as a way of making the investigation more transparent, it is appropriate to leave it up to whoever is in charge of the investigation and the best way was to show General Bernales that my position is now open for him to do as he sees fit”, said Vidal.
After arriving in uniform to a meeting with Bernales, which lasted just over 15 minutes, Vidal stated that the Chief of Police had accepted his decision and that he would be transferred to another unit.
Yesterday at La Moneda, Bernales had emphatically defended Vidal.
