SANTIAGO. - After meeting with Carmen Fernández, who is the head of the National Emergency Office (Onemi), Sub Secretary of the Interior Felipe Harboe has stated that a total of 4,892 people, 347 of which are currently being housed in shelters, have fallen victim to the front of bad weather that has been affecting the central-southern area of the country over the past few days.
The areas most affected by the weather system have been the regions of Maule and Bío Bío, with school classes being cancelled in both Maule and some parts of Bío Bío.
Concerning road conditions, the sub secretary has indicated that travel on the main routes in the area has not been impaired, but that some secondary roads, particularly within the Seventh Region, are not traversable.
Referring to the current situation within Metropolitan Region, the head of Onemi stated, “it is complicated, just as it is in the areas that have received the brunt of the weather”.
Meanwhile, four fatalities have been attributed to the storm and it has recently been reported that 26 tons of material aid, as well as makeshift shelters for those who have been misplaced, have been offered in the areas most affected by the weather phenomenon.
