SANTIAGO.- After the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) party Senator Juan Antonio Coloma and Deputy José Antonio Kast manifested their willingness to compete to become president of the party in July, the party’s current leader, Hernán Larraín, asserted that both men are good candidates to succeed him, opting not to show a preference for either.
The senator maintained that before designating a name, “it is more necessary to define what kind of political trajectory we want, how we are going to coordinate our personal agendas with those of the party”.
Last Thursday, Larrain announced that he would not be running as president of the party again, causing a stir within the political group, since it would be the first time a UDI president did not run for a second term.
Larraín argued that he has “personal reasons” for his decision and called members to “consolidate our internal unity (…) placing the common interest above personal priorities”.
