PUNTA ARENAS.- Punta Arenas is currently experiencing a critical shortage of food supplies, especially sugar, rice and flour.

The farming crisis in Argentina is the main cause for the shortage within the commercial zone, which is why importers are currently quoting prices for the missing products on the international markets of China, Holland and Thailand.

Iván Alcaino, the general manager of the Duty Free Zone, explained that all of the food importers are being affected by the agricultural industry crisis in Argentina.

“The strike has impeded large vehicles from leaving with products, causing a significant shortage of the goods that are imported from our neighboring country”, he stated.

Radio Polar reported that the Duty Free Zone expects food supply stock shipments to resume within 30 days, but with higher prices than before.
