SANTIAGO.- Fans of the Chilean National Soccer Team were elated today following last night's 3-1 defeat over Peru following a 24-year dry spell at qualifying matches in the neighboring country.
The national team was scheduled to arrive at 1:00 am this morning; however the bus transporting the squadron from the Lima Monumental Stadium was delayed.
Once onboard the charter airplane, Marcelo Bielsa's team was able to relax and, amidst jokes and applause from passengers, the players began their trip back to Santiago.
At the international airport, close to one hundred fans awaited the team. After almost a two-hour delay, Marcelo Bielsa's boys arrived at approximately 4:00 am this morning and began boarding a bus one by one on their way to the Juan Pinto Durán Athletic Complex.
Unfortunately the homecoming was also very chaotic. The players were harassed by fans, who prevented them from passing through while demanding autographs and photos with them.
Meanwhile, members of the press unsuccessfully tried to obtain statements from those responsible for this historic win.
After boarding the bus, the team was taken to the Macul athletic complex, where they will remain to prepare for the monumental confrontation this Wednesday against Uruguay.
