SANTIAGO.- Police from the 19th Commissary of Providencia have arrested a man that had been pimping eight Paraguayan women and two Chilean women working as prostitutes in the municipality.

At approximately midnight last night, police raided two homes on the streets of Puyehue and Los Naranjos, where undercover officers managed to arrest 48 year-old Hugo Figueroa Salazar. According to preliminary investigations, the man had contacted the Paraguayan women by Internet and paid for their bus tickets to Chile.

The women charged $20,000 pesos for their services and gave half of the amount to Figueroa, allowing them to earn up to 150,000 pesos per day.

Sources have indicated that the man arrested has been involved in this type of activity since November of 2007 and had been offering services through two web pages.

During the operation, police posed as clients and entered the residence with hidden cameras to verify neighbors' reports of illicit activity.

Police Captain Cristián Guerra stated that authorities are currently investigating whether or not Figueroa had been working with others and are looking in to two other homes, where similar activities may have been taking place.
