SANTIAGO.- Six people have been left homeless after their residence was destroyed by a fire this morning on Austria street in the Municipality of Recoleta.

According to preliminary information, the blaze began just after 8:30 AM on the second floor of the home due to causes that are still under investigation.

The homeowner, IIian Encalada, said that she went to drop off her children at school with her husband and saw smoke coming from one of the homes when she returned. "I didn't know that it was mine, we ran and we saw that a fire on the second floor had consumed everything", said the woman.

Encalada added that her mother and sick nephew were at home when the fire began and said that the couple managed to get them to safety before the home was entirely burned down.

Seven fire departments with 50 fire-fighters were dispatched to the scene. According to Cristián Riady, who is the third commander of the Conchalí Fire Department, the home was completely destroyed and one fire-fighter was injured while trying to control the blaze.
