Suspect killed by an off-duty police officer while trying to steal a car

The incident occurred when two assailants began to argue with an auto shop assistant.

SANTIAGO.- A suspect was killed by an off-duty police officer while trying to carjack a man.


According to Cooperativa radio station, the incident happened in front of a residence located at 0620 San Tomás street, in the "La Granja" area of the city, when two attackers began arguing with an auto shop assistant.


An off-duty police officer living in an adjacent house intervened and killed one of the two attackers.


The head of Cordillera Police Department, Colonel Darío Goldberg, said "the man identified himself as a police officer and one of the perpetrators pointed a gun at him, causing the officer to fire once into the air and then again at the suspect, who was killed".


The assailant that was killed was accompanied by another man, who managed to escape.


Following orders made by the South Public Attorney's Office, the case will be investigated by the Metropolitan Department of Homicide.
