Series of strong earthquakes reported off the northern coast of Chile

The seismic tremors measured magnitudes of 6.0, 5.2 and 6.2 respectively.

WASHINGTON.- According to reports from the Unites States Geological Service (USGS), a series of tectonic movements were registered north of Antofogasta early this morning.


The first earthquake, with a 6.0 magnitude was centered 55 kilometers to the north of Antofogasta and was followed by another 6.2 magnitude earthquake two hours later which affected the same region.


The first earthquake, which occurred at 2:20 AM local time, registered a depth of 40 kilometers. Fifteen minutes later, geologists reported a second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 in the same area, this time 69 kilometers to the north of Antofogasta.


The third earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2, registered a depth of 59 kilometers.  Its epicenter was located 70 kilometers to the north of Antofogasta.


There is no information regarding victims or structural damage resulting from the strong earthquakes.
