SANTIAGO. -  Sergio Bitar, the new Minister of Public Works, appeared proud to take on the position that was once occupied by ex-President Ricardo Lagos.  Bitar has resigned as the Party for Democracy (PPD) president in order to work under Michelle Bachelet.

“I believe it is a privilege to serve your country, even if it is only for a few months and within Public Works, which is a crucial area where the highest standing member of our ranks also served for a time before becoming President of the Republic, I don’t want to make parallels because I would have to live some 100 years to be able to follow that trajectory and that is very slow”, stated Bitar.

The new state secretary also maintained that “today’s biggest task is to make President Michelle Bachelet´s administration a success, leading to the success of Chile”.

Bitar added that he would work “with effort and speed” putting forth “all of his experience” towards the good of the country.

The PPD is temporarily being directed by the party’s secretary general, Pepe Auth, until internal elections are held on April 20th.
