Three-year prison sentence given to man who killed young rugby player

SANTIAGO.- Roberto Angelini Reyna has been sentenced to three years in prison for the death of Martín Güell, a young rugby player who was killed in the municipality of Las Condes on May 18th, 2007.


On the night of the young man's death, Angelini had been driving above the speed limit in an Audi A3 under the influence of alcohol, when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Güell.


Angelini's guilty plea to the charges against him expedited the sentencing process.


The Fourth Penal Court of Santiago decided to uphold the request made by Las Condes Public Attorney Rodrigo De La Barra for a prison sentence of three years, in addition to a fine of $693 thousand Chilean Pesos (20 Monthly Tax Units), a two-year driver's license suspension, as well as seizure of the vehicle.


At the courthouse, Roberto Angelini offered an apology to the family of Martín Güell, stating that he never meant to kill the young rugby player and that the memory of this death with haunt him for the rest of his life.
