SANTIAGO.- A Peruvian national has turned himself in to authorities after being actively pursued by police in connection with the murder of his wife yesterday in her home on Abate Molina street, in downtown Santiago.

50 year-old Carlos José Tapia Haro arrived at the capital city Second Police station this morning.

According to Radio Cooperativa, Tapia (who has resided in Chile for 11 years) hailed a cab on the corner of streets Tarapacá and Dieciocho and told the driver that he wanted to turn himself in to police.

The driver, who also happened to be a retired law enforcement officer, took him the police station.

According to Néstor Ruiz, a police station official, the man confessed the murder to the officers and expressed his "remorse".

"Police officers apprehended him and took him to the social service center to report the injuries, the Public Ministry was then contacted; he will be held under the disposition of the Penalty Court", said the official.

Tapia Haro apparently murdered his wife, 48 year-old Antonia Briceño Contreras, out of jealousy.

The victim had filed abuse charges against her husband on two previous occasions.
