SANTIAGO. -  Chilean tenor Tito Beltrán has been found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison by the court of Ystad after being on trial for a 1999 rape of a nanny in Sweden.

Beltrán waited to hear the verdict from his home in Gotemburg.  The singer had previously announced that, whatever the ruling, he would be taking a vacation since he was not obligated to appear in court for the verdict nor serve any jail time while filing appeals at both at the trial court level and Supreme Court level.

Beltrán has harshly criticized the trial as well as level of support he has received from Chilean authorities, particularly from the Chilean ambassador to Sweden, Ovid Harasich.  Beltrán accused Harasich of “lying to him” after having guaranteed “political action” to aid Beltrán in his case.
