SANTIAGO. - Two police officers were killed on Tuesday night after a group of assailants shot at them at the intersection of the streets Cordillera and Villarrica in the municipality of Quilicura.
Preliminary reports indicate that Second Corporal Officer Job Burgos Burgos and First Corporal Officer Carlos Cuevas Golmo, who belonged to the municipality’s 49th Police Station, were shot by the individuals after responding to a reported robbery at a company located at the intersection.
While the suspects fled, the officials were immediately taken to the Quilicura Medical Center. The police officers later died as a result of their serious wounds.
The Chief of Metropolitan Police, General Jaime Giacomozzi, said that the attackers “apparently escaped” using the victims´ patrol car, abandoning the vehicle near the corner of Avenida Dorsal and Guanacos in the municipality of Recoleta.
General Giacomozzi stated that the officers had been wearing bullet-proof vests at the time of the attack and were not able to defend themselves.
