PUERTO MONTT. -  Despite a willingness to mediate on the part of the Archbishop of Puerto Montt, Monsignor Cristian Caro, the negotiations between the Salmon fishery Aguas Claras and the labor union have come to a halt. After trying to speak with both sides, Caro made an official announcement today that he had done “everything in his power”, and that “it is not the Church’s responsibility to take on the role of guarantor”.

Caro had spoken with both sides in an attempt to mediate the conflict; regardless, a conversation was never arranged because they could not reach an agreement about the terms and conditions of the dialogue.

Apparently, the company placed a condition on their participation that called for the exclusion of certain labor leaders at the negotiation table. Monsignor Caro did not go into further detail in his concise communiqué, but asserted that he had made the effort thinking in “the common good and social peace”.
