SANTIAGO. - The spokesperson of the governmental palace, Francisco Vidal, affirmed this morning that the resignation of Fidel Castro from the Cuban Presidency represents “after more than 40 years, the culmination of an era, and the Government (of Chile) hopes that Cuban people, just as much as the Cuban government, choose the path they will take with sovereignty.”

In sharing the standpoint of the executive branch of Chile, the secretary of State emphasized that “clearly this is a change of era”.

Minister Vidal also stated that “The Government of Chile hopes that the government and citizens of Cuba make decisions…….. that will take them down a specific path, towards a horizon”.

Finally, Vidal pointed out that Fidel Castro as a person “has an importance that goes beyond the extremes of devotion and condemnation that he has inspired in Chile and in the rest of the world”.
