Police detain two Mapuche individuals for armed holdup

The individuals are accused of holding up five drivers who were working in the Forestal Bosques Cautín Reserve.

LOS SAUCES. - Law enforcement officials of Los Sauces, located in the Malleco province, arrested two Mapuche activists last night. They are accused of the armed detention of five drivers.


According to Radio Digital FM, the individuals in custody belong to the Mapuche community of Pelehuito and used firearms to restrain the drivers who were providing service to the Forestal Bosques Cautín area.


The detainees are identified as Julio Gorteu Paine, age 23, and José Paine Osses, age 21.


The incident took place shortly after midnight in the sector of San Luis, about 25 kilometers from the aforementioned community. One of the bus drivers refused to get out of the cabin of one of the vehicles and was able to use his cell phone to alert police.
