SANTIAGO.- This morning, National Renovation (RN) Senator Sergio Romero asked the government to honor the promise made this past December to reconsider the excise tax on fuel – which currently makes up 40% of the price paid by consumers for gasoline and diesel.
Romero mentioned that the Minister of Housing and Minister of Interior had announced that the issue would be addressed in March because, “if we break it down right now, we will have to cancel tolls, fuel taxes, traffic permits, and let’s not forget about the VAT (Value Added Tax)”.
The senator expressed concern for the future, “we should keep an eye on what happens during the winter since, not to be even more pessimistic, there will not be enough natural gas, and we can´t rule out the possibility that prices may go up”, he stated — reporting that electricity prices have already risen from 2 to 33%.
Sergio Romero heads a campaign in the Region of Valaparaíso to spread awareness of the issue, hoping to instigate a reduction in taxes charged on fuel.
