SANTIAGO.-  After the agreement reached by senators of the independent committee to elect Adolfo Zaldívar as the new president of the Upper House, Minister of Interior Edumundo Pérez Yoma has assured members that the government will correspond “with him just as it would with anyone in such a highly- distinguished position”.

The head of the cabinet opted not to dramatize the “read-headed” leader’s appointment as President of the Senate.  Zaldivar was expelled from the Christian Democratic (DC) party this past December and has been a strong source of criticism regarding government-proposed projects such as the additional financing required for the Transantiago transportation system during 2007.

“In the Senate, we will have to evaluate him based on his attitude in the position and I believe that he will know how to behave accordingly, given the prestige of the position”, stated Pérez Yoma.

Pérez Yoma added that, in recent months, the government had been considering the possibility that that Zaldívar may become the head of the Upper House.
