Tunnel found leading to Colina II Penitentiary

A crawlway measuring 80 meters long had been dug from the street leading inside the facility, resulting in the arrest of four individuals.

SANTIAGO. -  Officers from Chile’s Police Investigative Department and Prison Security Force have discovered a tunnel that was excavated from the street leading to the inside of the Colina II prison facility in the Municipality of Colina, located to the north of the Metropolitan Region.


According to reports, the joint operation between the two law enforcement divisions to unearth the tunnel began at 7:30 AM this morning in the rear area of the penitentiary. They discovered a tunnel measuring 80 meters in length.


Detectives have arrested four suspects who will be taken to the Central North Public Attorney’s Office within the next few hours.


Reports also indicate that the tunnel contained a lighting system, wood and cement pillars, a ventilation system made of tubes, old carts and egg cartons to soundproof the area, as well as a hook to lift dirt and cement in the first half.  shanks, shovels and a radio were also found at the location.
