SANTIAGO.-  Presidential Secretary General José Antonio Viera Gallo opted not to dramatize the election of Adolfo Zaldívar (independent) as head of the Upper House, stating that “the head of the Senate’s job is more like that of an orchestra conductor than a political leader”.

Viera Gallo also explained that the leader of the Upper House “has to coordinate, represent all senators and allow the collective body to deliberate”.

Viera Gallo added that Zaldivar will have to facilitate the tasks of the Senate and seemed quite confident that the former Member of Parliament would not have any problem interacting with the Government.

When questioned about the possibility of Zaldívar using his new position as a platform to launch a presidential campaign, Viera Gallo maintained that “anything is possible in the realm of public service”, but pointed out that not all leaders of the Senate have gone on to become President of the Republic.
