Visit from Condoleezza Rice spurs protests in front of La Moneda

SANTIAGO. -  Dozens of people are protesting the arrival of the United States Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, scheduled for this afternoon.


Some forty demonstrators have gathered in the area around the Salvador Allende monument in the Plaza de la Consitución in front of the presidential palace, La Moneda.


According to Radio Bio Bio, the protesters are carrying a banner that reads in Spanish: “Condoleezza Rice, persona non grata in our country” and are shouting out slogans against the U.S. official’s visit.


Condoleezza Rice is scheduled to arrive in Chile at 2:30 PM, after which she will attend a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Alejandro Foxely, at the Office of the Chancellor.


Later, Condoleezza Rice will attend a dinner being held in her honor by President Michelle Bachelet.
