SANTIAGO.-  The company NIC Chile, which is in charge of managing the country’s websites, has shut down a page dedicated to ex-President Salvador Allende being used to honor the man who overthrew him, deceased, ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet.

The site, salvadorallende.cl, was purchased by an attorney who supports Pinochet after the site’s previous Allende-supporting owners stopped paying for ownership rights.

For a few hours, the site dedicated to Allende was used to mock the political figure and exalt Pinochet, demanding that a monument to honor him be erected in the Plaza de la Constitución, in front of the La Moneda presidential palace.

The company NIC.cl resolved the situation by redirecting traffic to another page without a tribute to the former dictator (1973-1990).

Deputy Isabelle Allende, daughter of ex-President Allende, praised “the reaction of the people, and the fact that they were just as upset as we were”.
