SANTIAGO.-  Just after 10:00 AM today, some 300 students gathered to protest against the education system on the corner of Alameda and Estado.  The group was broken up by police after the demonstration began to impede traffic in the area.

The students (many of whom were wearing hoods) gathered on both sides of Alameda at approximately 9:30 AM, stopping traffic in both directions until police managed to break up the demonstration using teargas.

Many of the mostly high school students were affected by the teargas.

Later, another teargas vehicle arrived at the scene along with two high pressure water hoses and some 50 officers belonging to Special Police Forces, who arrested at least 20 protestors.

After the intervention by police, the situation became relatively calm, allowing traffic to resume to normal even though there are still some students currently located in the area.
