SANTIAGO.-  An evaluation by both workers and executives of appeals stemming from the subcontracting law began in front of an extensive audience including several Codelco union leaders at the Supreme Court today.

The court plans to review nine of the appeals rulings issued over the last few weeks by various appeals courts, most of which favored mining companies.

The representative for the copper workers, Cristián Cuevas, is among those attending and has said he trusts that the Supreme Court will fulfill what was outlined by the National Labor Department, requiring Codelco to internalize five thousand of the company’s own subcontracted workers and more than 700 workers from the private company.

“We believe that it would be very regretful if the Supreme Court were to rule against us”, stated Cuevas, reiterating that the Subcontracting Law was passed by President Bachelet herself as one of the pillars of her program to aid workers.
