SANTIAGO.- The government expressed concern for the salmon industry following an article published in the United States newspaper, The New York Times, accusing the sector of using excessive levels of antibiotics.
“We are very worried, we think this could seriously affect the salmon industry, which is vital to the Tenth and Eleventh Regions”, stated Minister of Interior Edmundo Pérez Yoma.
Yoma explained that a plan is currently being developed by the Ministry of the Economy to apply a series of measures to the salmon industry. “The minister of Economy, Hugo Lavados, is closely monitoring the situation and the Chilean ambassador to the United States, Mariano Fernández, has taken many measures already”, he added.
Yoma denied that the issue is a “campaign to defame” Chilean salmon farmers. “We have a problem at the moment”, he said.
