SANTIAGO.- After publicly expressing her disappointment concerning the decision made by the Constitutional Tribunal (CT) to prohibit the distribution of the “day-after” pill, President Michelle Bachelet instructed Minister of the Presidency José Antonio Viera-Gallo and Minister of Justice Carlos Maldonado to investigate possible ways to have the ruling overturned.
The information was announced by the government spokesperson, Francisco Vidal, who reiterated the President’s discontent for the measure, saying that not only is “the freedom of the individual” on the line, but that it is also a matter of “unacceptable inequality in a mature, responsible country".
Vidal asserted that the government will continue to persevere in creating public health policies, with a responsible family planning policy so as to prevent abortions, stressing that “the great paradox is that the pro-life supporters are on the side of the issue offering incentive for the highest of crimes: abortion”.
