SANTIAGO.-  The president of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI), Hernán Larraín, has said that yesterday’s proceedings represent a great step forward for the country.  The statement comes less than 24 hours after the Senate ratified the constitutional charge against the former minister of Education, Yasna Provoste, removing her from office.

While downplaying the importance of criticism received from the Concertación for having implemented a “parliamentary attack”, Senator Larraín seemed surprised by “the extreme reaction from government and Concertación officials when the institutions have done their job, when the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate have exercised their constitutional duties”.

Senator Larraín said that he finds it “excessive on the part of the Concertación to discredit the workings of the institutions, because the most harmful thing for our legal system would be if these institutions were not employed as established in the Constitution and that is what these extremists are saying today”.

Larraín added that his party “is calm” in the face of this opposition.
