SANTIAGO.- Lamenting that Yasna Provoste´s removal from office was a “sad and unjustified act”, the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, warned of the dangers posed to the country now that a “new majority” has risen in Congress.

Insulza asserted that the members of Parliament who approved the dismissal “are going to end up destroying the country’s institutional processes if they keep it up”.

“When a certain limit of the interpretation of the Constitution is passed, it falls into the hands of the system which looks to Parliament to decide who will continue to be a minister or not, this has been disastrous in Chile’s history”, the former minister of Interior stated.  While speaking from Colombia, Insulza reminded people of the civil war in 1891, the “ineffective government administrations” at the beginning of the 20th century and the “crisis during the government of Allende”.

During an interview with Radio Cooperative, Insulza acknowledged, “there might have been some problems” within the Ministry of Education, but nevertheless stated, “the minister did a good job”, which in his opinion, “does not justify what has happened”.
