University of Chile: Unemployment in the Greater Santiago area remained at 8.8% for March

SANTIAGO.- The unemployment rate within the Greater Santiago area has remained steady at 8.8% for the month of March.  According to the employment poll taken by the University of Chile, the figure indicates that there has been no change over the last 12 months.

The figure is equal to 246,700 jobless residents. Compared to December of 2007, the unemployment rate for March fell by 0.1%.

The sectors with the highest proportion of the labor force unemployed are construction, trade, municipal and social services, as well as the manufacturing industry.
