SANTIAGO.- The presidential candidate for the National Renovation (RN) party, Sebastián Piñera, is the politician with the most potential according to the latest CERC poll, which indicates that Piñera holds a 45% preference rate.  The figure is four percentage points lower than that registered in December of 2007, but is 19 points higher than that of the DC president, Soledad Alvear.

Senator Alvear fell five points in the poll, registering a support rate of 24%, followed by Joaquín Lavín, who reported the same 21% rating as in the previous poll.

Former President Ricardo Lagos came in at fourth place after climbing six points to a rate of 20%, which allowed him to bump the OAS secretary general, José Miguel Insulza, to fifth place.

According to the director of CERC, Carlos Hunneus, the electoral scenario is wide open.

On the other hand, the evaluation of President Michelle Bachelet’s performance rose four points to 50%, while the proportion of those who do not approve of her administration was reported at 41%.
