Police rescue two lost hikers on Pochoco hill

The two lost men phoned police who, after analyzing the situation, began a rescue operation led by GOPE officers.

SANTIAGO. - A rescue operation was immediately put into action after 27 year-old José Antonio Olfo Ruiz-Tagle placed a phone call to police at approximately 11:20 PM last night to notify law-enforcement that he and his friend, 25 year-old Osvaldo Jerez Hernández, were lost on Pochoco hill in Lo Barnechea.


After receiving the call, police found a possible access point and began the search effort with on-duty officers. When they failed to find the lost men, officers from the Chilean Special Police Operations Force (GOPE) were then contacted to aid in the rescue.


Police contacted the families of the men to find out whether Olfo and Jerez possessed adequate equipment and know-how for the situation. The families´ indications lead to the rescue of the two lost hikers at approximately 2:00 AM. 


The hikers were found and declared unharmed after being examined by a doctor on duty at the time at the Lo Barnechea Post medical facility.
