SANTIAGO.- This morning, President Michelle Bachelet confirmed the issuance of an order to completely evacuate the area of Chaiten due to the eruption of the volcano bearing the same name as the town, which is located only 10 kilometers from the village.
The President delayed the beginning of the ceremony where the Presidential Guidance Council for Equality and Labor delivered its final report after being in contact with authorities in the Lake District, who revealed the dangerous situation in the Palena province.
The Head of State said that a complete evacuation order had been issued since the volcanic lava could reach the town of Chaiten in only 20 minutes.
“We hope this (the evacuation) is carried out optimally (…) and that it happens as safely as possible”.
The President pointed out the work being done by authorities and residents in the area, who have come together to confront the complex situation in the best way possible.
