SANTIAGO.- Despite the fact that he is not in his best physical condition, Fernando Gonzalez (11) is, little by little, starting to get back in touch with the skill that led him to be crowned champion in Munich Germany last week.
He demonstrated this when, in the second round of the Rome Masters Series this Wednesday, Gonzalez categorically conquered Russian player Egeny Korolev (N98) by 6-3 and 6-2 in one hour and one minute of playtime.
Chile’s number one tennis player began the first set with a solid game, allowing him to break the Russian’s serve during the sixth game. From that point on, the Santiago native served his way to a victory of 6-3 in 32 minutes.
During the second set, Gonzalez came out exhilarated and set on making it through to the next round. Early on, the world’s N11 player broke Korolev´s serve during the third game and then again in the seventh game to close out the match with a sturdy 6-2 in 29 minutes.
At the third round of the tournament, Gonzalez will go up against Spanish player Nicolás Almagro (N21).
