SANTIAGO.- President Michelle Bachelet sent out an encouraging message to families that were forced to abandon their homes due to the eruption of the Chaiten volcano.
While presiding over the closing ceremony at the Hogar de Cristo 2008 National Volunteer Campaign, the President said that her administration “is working on integral solutions” so that those affected by the volcano can rest assured that they will have a brighter future.
The Head of State asserted that Mother Nature brought about this new challenge, “and we are positive that we will know how to use our will to overcome it”.
President Bachelet also brought attention to the spirit of service demonstrated by police and Armed Forces officials who have been working in the emergency zone, as well as the “impressive” courage the evacuees have shown.
The national leader attended the ceremony after meeting for over an hour with the minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, and the head of Defense, Jose Goni, who was appointed yesterday as the minister for the Chaiten campaign.
