SANTIAGO.- The mayor of Nuñoa, Pedro Sabat, deemed it “inappropriate that they prefer to leave a statue of a ‘naked guy’ holding a disc instead of having something that we tried like crazy all last year to have considered (part of) the seven wonders of the world”, responding to the decision made by the Council of National Monuments (CMN) ordering that the moai, which was to be inaugurated by the mayor in front of the National Stadium tomorrow, be removed.
The 5-meter tall sculpture, which was carved into volcanic rock by two islanders and is worth 15 million pesos, will have to be transferred back to its original location due to the fact that the CMN believes it does not coincide with the architectural style of the National Stadium.
“We have already spoken (to the Council) and we told them that we are just going to have to inaugurate it there, whether they like it or not and we’ll have to look for another place for it afterwards”, stated Sabat, maintaining that “there is no place more appropriate, more suitable, or better fit for the monument or the Easter Island culture than that one”, referring to the national sports facility.
