Father murders newborn in Valparaíso

VALPARAÍSO.- A newborn baby was stabbed to death by his father shortly after his mother gave birth to him in the bathroom of a home in the city of Valparaíso.

During the early hours of Tuesday morning, the baby’s father used a pair of scissors to cut the child’s umbilical cord before stabbing the newborn at least 44 times in the head, torso, abdomen and appendages.

At approximately 1:30 AM, the grandmother of the baby arrived at the Van Buren Hospital carrying the child’s body in a garbage bag and claiming that her daughter had suffered a miscarriage.  This allegation was later ruled out by doctors.

The suspect is currently being held at the Second Police Station of Valparaíso. Meanwhile, the 18 year-old mother has been admitted to the Van Buren Hospital, where, according to Radio Cooperativa, she is being treated for intense postpartum pain.
