SANTIAGO.- The vice president of the Christian Democracy Party, Hosaín Sabag, said today that it was not the party’s place to offer up an institutional vow of support for former Senator Jorge Lavandero after the ex-Senator accused the party of failing to support him while he spent two and a half years in prison for sexually abusing minors.

Sabag stated that, the moment Lavandero decided to accept the charges against him and enter into a plea bargain, there was no reason for the party to offer its official support.

During an interview with TVN last night, Lavandero asserted that he was “a progressive man (…) a socialist Christian and I just think that they didn’t defend me”.

According to the former Member of Parliament, no one publicly came forward to back him. “They were all very supportive in private”.
